Protect Yourself During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been the top news story for weeks, and will continue to be until the deadly virus stops spreading. New York State alone has seen several confirmed COVID-19 cases within the past couple of weeks. Below are some resources and tips for your safety and current information on the virus:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Carry and use a hand sanitizer that is at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick, to protect yourself, co-workers and others.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • If you experience flu-like symptoms and have traveled to areas of concern or have been in contact with somebody who has, call ahead to your health careprovider before going in to get instructions on how to proceed.
  • Keep your immune system strong by getting enough sleep, eating well and taking medications as prescribed.
  • It is not too late to get a flu shot.

The NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) is running a hotline which you can call for updated information: (1-888-364-3065). You can also check the NYSDOH website for more information.

Some organizations have issued guides written specifically for people with disabilities. New Mobility published an article with disability-specific recommendations here. NMD United, a peer-led and run  organization composed of adults living with neuromuscular disabilities (NMDs), also provided a COVID-19 Guide for Adults Living with Neuromuscular Disease.
